Environment Counts | Australia’s electricity generation emissions drop 6.1% :
The Quarterly Update of Australia’s National Greenhouse Gas Inventory for March Quarter 2013 reported that annual emissions for the year to March 2013 are estimated to be 557.0 Mt CO2-e. This represents zero growth in emissions when compared with the year to March 2012. In 2012 the Australian economy grew by 3.1%.
Emissions in the electricity generation sector dropped by 6.1% due to continued declines in electricity demand and changes in the generation fuel mix. This was offset by increases in the fugitive emissions (12.7%) resulting from increased production activity in the coal mining and natural gas sub-sectors and stationary energy excluding electricity (1.6%), trasnport (3.1%) and agriculture (3.0%).
