Environment Counts | EPA launches citizen science web site :
Citizen science is scientific research conducted by amateur or nonprofessional scientists, often by crowdsourcing and crowdfunding. Citizen science projects are already contributing important information on climate change. The Christmas Bird Count, which has been conducted for 114 years by thousands of volunteers, has been analyzed by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) scientists who have found that North American bird species moved northward and away from coasts during the winter since the 1960s.
The average species shifted northward by 35 miles during this period. For some species this represents range extensions of 200-400 miles. The EPA has launched a citizen science website with resources to support community-based citizen science projects for water, air, and soil.
