Environment Counts | Institute of Atmospheric Physics: 2008 – 2015 Status Report :

The German Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IPA) has published a major report presenting a summary of its activities and research from 2008 to 2015. DLR-IPA conducts globally significant continuing programs of primary data gathering on the middle atmosphere and works in close collaboration with other international research bodies active in the field across Europe, USA, China and other countries. The focus of the Institute is to investigate the physics and chemistry of the global atmosphere from the Earth’s surface up to the upper boundary of the middle atmosphere at about 120 km height. The IPA is part of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and is associated with and funded by the German Science Foundation, the EU and other German ministries and industry. The Institute was a significant contributor to the work of the IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change) and the AR 5 reports.
The Institute is structured in five departments which focus on the following five research areas: Earth System Modelling; Atmospheric Trace Species; Atmospheric Remote Sensing; Transport Meteorology; and Lidar. It publishes more than 100 peer-reviewed papers each year. These are available for review and downloading via the DLR-IPA site. The IPA site provides ready access to the entire published oeuvre of Institute from 2000 to 2015 (including more than 1,000 peer-reviewed papers) on atmospheric physics and the body of data gathered and analysed by the approximately 140 scientists on staff along with their scientific collaborators in similar institutions around the World. A useful list of the research institutes and universities, weather services and international organisations, and scientific societies with which the IPA maintains collaborative initiatives and long term programs is provided along with links to the sites of those organisations.
