A partnership between the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and Google Earth has released the first interactive online maps showing natural gas leaks under the streets of Boston, Indianapolis and Staten Island, a borough of New York City.

The maps are the first phase of a pilot project which uses three Google Street View cars specially equipped with sensitive methane sensing technology. EDF and researchers at Colorado State University developed tools to not only locate, but also accurately assess the amount of gas escaping from very small leaks detected among 15 million individual readings collected over thousands of miles of roads and streets.
