A geothermal map of Australia suggests that if Australia were to use 2% of its geothermal potential using today’s technology, it could generate 395 GW or about half of China’s capacity.

Geothermal consulting company Hot Dry Rocks
released a geothermal map of Australia that shows the potential for exploiting geothermal energy. The map was developed in conjunction with Google.org and shows that if Australia were to use 2% of its geothermal potential using today’s technology, it could generate 395 GW, about half of China’s capacity.

Australia’s power generation capacity is overwhelmingly coal. As a result Australia has the highest per capita GHG emissions in the world. Because geothermal power is not intermittent like solar and wind, geothermal could more simply replace current coal and gas power supply and reduce Australia’s CO2 emissions.
