For a continuous period of 107 hours, from 0645 hours on Saturday 7 May to 1745 hours on Wednesday 11 May, 2016, Portugal was powered entirely by renewable energy from solar, wind and hydro-generated electricity. This is the longest run recorded to date for powering the country entirely by zero emission renewable electricity. According to APREN – the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association – in 2015 wind provided 22% of electricity and all renewable sources together provided 48%. Between 2013 and 2016 Portugal added 550MW of wind generating power capacity.
