Environment Counts | Record setting heatwaves across Australia :
Australia has been experiencing intense, record setting heatwaves in recent years. In 2013 more than 150 new heat records were set across the country. In large parts of Queensland average maximum weekly temperatures in early January, 2014 were 8 degrees C above normal. Temperatures in some recording locations exceeded 49.3 degrees C. Similar records were set in parts of New South Wales. Temperatures of 45 C were exceeded over most of central and eastern interior of Australia and over the Nullabor in the same period.
These data are provided by the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology in a series of (ongoing) reports including both Annual Climate Summaries and Special Climate Statements. These reports provide detailed summaries, data and charts on the current climate and recent “intense†and “significant heatwaves†across the Australian continent.
