According to the IPCC Climate Change 2007 Synthesis Report, by the year 2020 many regions will be severely affected by climate change impacts such as water stress, reduced agriculture yields, loss of biodiversity, reduced snow cover, and extensive species losses.
|
Some projected climate change impacts for regions, among others, will be :
1.Africa
– By 2020, between 75 and 250 million people are projected to be exposed to increased water stress .
– By 2020, in some countries , yields from rain-fed agriculture could be reduced by up to 50%.
2.Asia
– By 2050, freshwater availability in Central, South, East and South-East Asia, is projected to decrease
– Coastal areas, in South, East and South East Asia, will be at greatest risk due to increased flooding
3.Australia and New Zealand
-Significant loss of biodiversity is projected to occur.
– By 2030, water security problems are projected to intensify.
– By 2030, production from Agriculture and Forestry is projected to decline
4.Europe
– Increased risk of inland flash foods and more frequent coastal flooding.
– Mountainous areas will face glacier retreat, reduced snow cover, and extensive species losses
5.Latin America
-By mid-century, increases in temperature and associated decreases in soil water are projected to lead to gradual replacement of tropical forest by savanna in eastern Amazonia.
– A risk of significant biodiversity loss
6. North America
– More winter flooding and reduced summer flows
-Increased number of heat waves in cities
7. Small Islands
– Sea level rise is expected to exacerbate inundation, storm surge, erosion and other coastal hazards.
