Environment Counts | World’s largest online environmental data explorer and portal comes of age :
Published and maintained by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) the Environmental Data Explorer (EDE) and data portal is now the World’s largest authoritative source for data sets used by UNEP and its global network of partners in the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) report and other integrated environment assessments.
The EDE online database holds more than 500 different variables as national, subregional, regional and global statistics or as geospatial data sets (maps). Thematic coverages include freshwater, population, forests, emissions, waste, climate, disasters, health and GDP. The EDE is used by UNEP and its partners in the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) and other integrated environment assessments. The data providers include many primary data-collection agencies among the UN system and other key partners, including FAO, UNEP, UNESCO, UN Statistical Division, WHO, World Bank and OECD.
The EDE is available online and data can be displayed on-the-fly as maps, graphs and data tables and can be downloaded in different formats.
The GEO Data Portal was initiated in 2000, after the start of the third Global Environmental Outlook assessment (GEO-3), to improve the empirical base of the GEO and harmonize the data that are used for analysis. It has continued to grow in scope and improve in data quality and online access.
Online access to the EDE data and functions is provided on the EDE Home Page – link provided here. The Announcements section on the home page provides information on enhancements, newly added data sets and technical changes on the EDE.
The home page also provides access to user tutorials, a user guide, links to the various data providers and assistance (tips) in using the extensive and useful data visualization tools which are now included in the EDE to facilitate presentation of data by third parties. HTML support is provided to facilitate embedding data, maps, graphs and other presentation material in other web sites and blogs.
